Stonewell is made from the very best of the superlative Peter
Lehmann Barossa Shiraz vineyards. The grapes are drawn only
from low-yielding vineyards in the drier western areas of the
Barossa Valley. These vineyards, some planted well over 100
years ago, produce sparse bunches with tiny berries – small black
jewels – the secret of Stonewell Shiraz.
The 1999 vintage was a good solid vintage, and in the estimation
of the Barossa Winemakers, Shiraz was quite strong. The 1999
Stonewell Shiraz is a wine of great depth and intensity.
Fruit Sources: Stonewell, Kalimna, Koonunga, Ebenezer and
Greenock districts of the Barossa Valley.
Colour: Dark, brooding black centre
Bouquet: Classical Barossa Shiraz nose of plums, dark chocolate, black fruits and superbly integrated oak.
Palate: A mouthful of velvet black fruit with some raspberry, beautifully balanced by the soft underpinning of the predominantly French oak which does not dominate the fruit. It has good
soft, yet firm tannins and finishes long. Still a very youthful Shiraz.
Maturation: Fermented and thence matured for 20 months in
a mixture of new French (73%) and American (27%) oak hogsheads. Bottled February 2001 for release July 2004.
Cellaring: A wine with many years of life if cellared carefully.
Alc/Vol: 14.5%
Serving Suggestions: Excellent with rare roast beef, saddle of hare, or roasted lamb racks. Also a wonderful partner to matured cheddar and fresh crusty bread.
